Solar hot water: plan the installation, not just the tank
Ask the right questions about demand, roof access, shading, pipe routes, backup and maintenance before choosing solar water heating for a Greek home.

A solar water-heating proposal involves the household, roof and plumbing system together. The collector uses solar energy to help heat water, while the complete arrangement may include storage and backup. A tank capacity on a sales listing is not enough to assess the installation.
Describe actual hot-water use
Record the number of regular occupants, bathing patterns and periods when the property is empty. Explain whether the home is used year-round or seasonally. Ask the installer to size and specify the system around that demand, rather than choosing the largest package that appears affordable.
Check the roof before choosing equipment
Have the proposed location assessed for exposure, shading, support, access and the relevant building arrangements. In an apartment block, clarify use of shared areas and the installation route. Roof work should be planned and carried out by appropriate professionals; this article is not an instruction to access or alter a roof yourself.
Follow the full water route
Ask where pipes run, how they are protected, how the system connects to existing equipment and how backup is controlled. Confirm safe access to valves and maintenance points. Discuss the consequences of long periods away and the manufacturer’s operating instructions for that situation.
Compare the service plan
Request a complete installed quotation, commissioning records and a maintenance schedule. Ask which components are covered by which warranties and who services them locally. Keep the specification and contact details together. Any estimate of savings should state demand, existing equipment and other assumptions; solar exposure alone cannot establish a guaranteed financial return.
Your practical checklist
- Describe year-round and seasonal demand.
- Confirm roof suitability and building arrangements.
- Review pipe routes, controls and backup.
- Collect commissioning and maintenance instructions.
