Comfort & efficiency
A cooler Athens apartment starts before the air conditioner
Create a summer-comfort brief by observing sunlight, shading, ventilation and equipment needs before choosing a cooling upgrade.

If one room becomes uncomfortable every afternoon, buying a larger cooling unit is not the only question to ask. First understand when heat arrives, where it is felt and how the apartment is used. A short observation record can make a professional cooling assessment much more useful.
Record the pattern
For several representative days, note the time each room becomes uncomfortable, direct sunlight, blind positions and occupancy. Distinguish glare at a desk from warm air throughout a room. Record existing cooling settings and any maintenance issues. This does not replace an assessment, but it helps describe the problem accurately.
Consider the building and the equipment together
The US Department of Energy discusses shading, insulation, windows and ventilation as part of home cooling. For your Greek property, ask a qualified adviser which measures suit its exposure and construction. Do not assume ventilation alone will cool the home when outdoor conditions are hot or humid.
Make shading usable
A shading system is helpful only when it can be used at the right time. Consider access, wind exposure, daylight and the view from inside. External alterations or fixed structures may require property-specific checks. Compare a practical daily routine with an expensive system that is difficult to operate or maintain.
Specify comfort rather than a bigger machine
Ask the installer to assess the load, location, distribution, noise and controls. Discuss future window or insulation changes before equipment is sized. Keep filters and servicing on the manufacturer’s schedule. Avoid promises of a fixed bill reduction without a documented baseline and stated assumptions.
Your practical checklist
- Record room-by-room afternoon conditions.
- Review shading and building measures together.
- Have equipment properly assessed and sized.
- Compare comfort, noise and maintenance needs.
