A Mediterranean palette beyond white and blue

Build a calm, expressive palette for a Greek home using light, undertones, natural textures and a small number of deliberate colour decisions.

Mediterranean character does not require a themed room. It can come from the relationship between strong daylight, shaded surfaces, tactile materials and a confident accent. Instead of choosing colours from a screen, build a palette around the elements already present in your home.

Start with the least changeable surface

Look at flooring, stone, window frames and large fixed furniture. Notice whether their undertones feel warm, cool, pink, yellow or green. Choose a background colour that works with these rather than trying to neutralise every surface separately. An existing warm floor may be easier to work with than to hide.

Give colour a hierarchy

Choose a main background, a supporting material and one accent family. For example, chalky off-white, warm timber and olive can feel quiet; a cobalt chair can make the same setting more energetic. These are design directions, not fixed formulas. Use the strongest colour where you want attention, rather than distributing it evenly across the room.

Test light and shadow

Paint generous sample boards and move them between walls. View them in daylight and under the lamps you intend to use. Compare the sample beside the actual floor and fabric. A colour that feels soft in a shop can look stark against a shaded wall or take on a different cast near strong reflected light.

Add texture before adding more colours

Linen, woven fibres, matte ceramics and timber can create variety within a restrained palette. Consider cleaning and exposure: a delicate fabric beside a busy balcony door may be impractical. Choose a few repeated materials to connect rooms, then allow each room its own emphasis.

Your practical checklist

  • Identify the undertone of fixed surfaces.
  • Choose one main accent direction.
  • Test large samples in your own light.
  • Balance atmosphere with cleaning and wear.
