Outdoor living

A small Greek balcony that earns its place

Plan a compact balcony around one useful activity, clear access, suitable furniture and the building checks needed before adding heavy or fixed elements.

A balcony can become a breakfast spot, a quiet reading corner or a place to care for plants. Trying to make it all three at once may leave little usable space. Choose the activity you genuinely want to do there, then design around the door, exposure and maintenance.

Start with the threshold

Open the balcony door fully and mark the walking route. Check how furniture affects shutters, drains and access for cleaning. Measure a chair while someone is sitting in it, not only when pushed under the table. Keep safety features unobstructed and avoid arrangements that encourage climbing near the edge.

Choose one main use

For coffee, a small table and two comfortable seats may be enough. For reading, prioritise one good chair and practical shade. Foldable pieces can help if you have somewhere suitable to store them. Compare the usable footprint with the advertised dimensions and avoid filling every corner simply because it is empty.

Respect the building limits

Before adding large planters, heavy finishes, fixed screens or shade structures, have loads, fixings, waterproofing and any approvals checked by the appropriate professional. A balcony is part of a building, not a blank outdoor room. Do not drill into unknown layers or assume a railing can support accessories.

Make upkeep easy

Choose furniture and fabrics specified for the actual exposure. Plan where cushions go during poor weather and how water drains after cleaning or irrigation. Leave access to inspect surfaces and drainage points. A modest balcony that is easy to use every day is often more satisfying than a dense arrangement that requires constant rearranging.

Your practical checklist

  • Keep the door and walking route clear.
  • Choose one primary activity.
  • Check heavy additions and fixings professionally.
  • Plan storage, cleaning and drainage access.
